Jerry Seinfeld’s Netflix show “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee” is somewhat of an insight into the mindset of a lot of comedians that are his guests on the show. In watching the series, it is clear that comedians and comedic writers are always watching and, in turn, writing. Everything can be a joke or a bit. Having that in mind, writing things down as they take place is often the beginning of jokes. Multiple times during the conversations, Seinfeld intimates that writing things down is the draft to nearly all of his jokes. After the initial idea is written down, the phrasing, timing, and other important parts to jokes come together around that initial thought. Legend has it that Seinfeld has worked on a single joke for up to two years before ever saying it out loud to an audience.
